Volunteers Week - Drivers

Like our riders our drivers hold an advanced certificate and some are also riders. We know we are called ‘Blood Bikes’ but our drivers are just as important. Our cars are used to transport ‘Blood on Board’ to the Great North Air Ambulance Service, they take our larger consignments for transportation, they can even be called upon to transport clinician’s on emergency call plus when the weather is poor they enable us to maintain a continuous service. During the colder months not only are they key to staying on the roads but when the temperature drops below 3 degree centigrade we cannot transport whole blood on bikes. Over the past year our drivers have stepped up to offer extra support to the NHS during the daytime assisting with their extra transportation requirements. We want to acknowledge everyone’s extra efforts especially in the last year and we are so grateful for your hard work. Thank you!
