Yesterday three Blood Bike groups have taken part in a national relay of Fecal Microbial Transplantation (FMT) samples.
Starting with Steve from Shropshire, Staffordshire & Cheshire Blood Bikes who collected the samples from University of Birmingham Microbiome Treatment Centre. They were relayed with John from Whiteknights Yorkshire Blood Bikes, at Barlborough, who then transported them up to Scotch Corner where our volunteer driver Harry. He then delivered them to Northumbria Specialist Emergency Care Hospital in Cramlington.
All completed completely free of charge for the NHS by Blood Bike volunteers.
What is Faecal Microbiota Transplant (FMT)?
Faecal microbiota transplant (FMT) is the transfer of the gut bacteria and other components in faeces from a screened healthy donor to an individual with a specific disease with the aim of treating the disease. The procedure can control an infection called Clostridium difficile, or C. diff, by adding healthy bacteria into the recipient's intestines.
