Title:
RIDER & DRIVER SAFETY
Details:

FOR THE ATTENTION OF RIDERS, DRIVERS & CONTROLLERS

In order to keep Riders & Drivers safe, especially during cold, wet or hot weather, members are encouraged to monitor their workload and request breaks when they feel it necessary to maintain their own health, safety & welfare. If any member feels they need to stand down from duty due to riding or weather conditions, then controllers will always respect this so long as the request is reasonable to prevent excess workloads being placed on other members.

Shift Controllers should monitor individual workloads and respect such requests for rest breaks, especially when limited vehicles are on duty and also look to build in rest breaks for Riders and Drivers, who should also forewarn Controllers of required rest breaks. This may mean that urgent requests may be difficult to fulfill and Controllers should inform callers and advise them of their options. This also applies when approaching end of shift, especially if the vehicle is being handed over to another member who should not be kept waiting longer than is reasonably required.

Unless unforseen circumstances occur, Controllers should look to get vehicles back to their bases by the end of their shift (particularly important after 12 hour shifts). Likewise Riders & Drivers should assist Controllers to deliver their job requests by staying on duty as long as possible up to their shift end but always allowing time for travel back to home bases within their allocated shift period. This is the responsibility of all parties and Controllers should never purposely push Riders & Drivers to complete jobs that will result in late return to home base.

Remember we are both a team and volunteers so everyones assistance is appreciated.

If anyone feels they have any issues whilst on duty, their concerns should be reported to the Rota Manager - rota@northumbriabloodbikes.org.uk (copying in the Shift Control Lead - training@northumbriabloodbikes.org.uk) so they can be looked into rather than letting issues grow.
