Why I volunteer...
“I joined Northumbria Blood Bikes as a volunteer rider in 2015; after I found out about the charity when they were fundraising at Sainsbury’s in Durham. I love riding, and thought this was a good way to combine that with giving something back. Other than driving I’ve done every aspect of our roles. I try to do a bit of everything for the charity, time permitting, and hope to do my advanced driving at some point to get the full toolset.
It is a struggle at times to fit in around my day job, especially with a new job that involves working away. However, I tend to find a night shift has the least impact as a little sleep during the day is easier than missing out on a whole day of family time.
I think it is hard to pinpoint one thing that can be classed as the ‘best’ thing I’ve experienced. It is great talking to members of the public who have had first-hand experience of the benefit of our service, as we have no idea who and why we are transporting for. However, the biggest ‘thing’ is probably seeing how many people in the north east go above and beyond, from the hours put in from the volunteers to the ridiculous time put in by the committee members to keep the charity and the service running smoothly. It’s hard to pick just most memorable moment, there are been so many from fundraising, training, riding, co-ordinating and talks.
If you’re thinking of becoming a volunteer be sure of the time commitment necessary, but other than that don’t hesitate; the rota still always has gaps! There really is a role for everybody just visit our website to register today www.northumbriabloodbikes.org.uk.
My name is Wilf Moralee and that is why I volunteer for Northumbria Blood Bikes.”
